Blue Cross partners get benefits
Boston-In an unusual move for a health insurance company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts will expand its employee medical benefits to also include domestic partners.
The policy, to begin January 1, will extend benefits to couples whether they are of the same sex or opposite sex, the company announced November 8.
Arthur Banks, Blue Cross' senior vice president for human resources, said the decision demonstrates the company is "committed to supporting the needs of a diverse work force.'
At least one other Blue Cross plan, in Vermont, also plans to offer similar benefits to its employees starting next year, a spokesman said.
Bottoms appeals custody ruling
Richmond-A lesbian should not be denied custody of her son simply because she lives with another woman, lawyers told a state appeals court in asking that the custody decision be reversed.
Lawyers for Sharon Bottoms on November 15 asked the Virginia Court of Appeals to overturn a September ruling that gave custody of her 2-year-old son to Bottoms' mother, Kay Bottoms.
In a ruling that enraged gay activists, Henrico County Circuit Judge Buford Parsons ruled that Sharon Bottoms" "immoral” relationship with her live-in lover made her an unfit mother to 2-year-old Tyler Doustou.
Parsons upheld a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court ruling that awarded custody of the boy to Kay Bottoms and gave Sharon Bottoms visitation rights. The boy's father was not involved in the case.

gon's ban on gays, the judge hearing the case has indicated.
U.S. District Judge Stanley Sporkin said Sgt. Justin C. Elzie had presented "a strong case that he will probably succeed in establishing that the policy banning gays from the military solely on the basis of status serves no legitimate governmental purpose."
Sporkin offered that glimpse into his thinking November 10 in an order instructing the Pentagon not to discharge or take "any adverse action" against Elzie while his case is pending.
Chief Warrant Officer Bill Wright, a Marine Corps spokesman, said, “The Marine Corps-will abide by the ruling."
Elzie's attorney said he will probably now ask for a summary judgment in Elzie's lawsuit-meaning he will ask Sporkin for an immediate decision in Elzie's favor.
Elzie, 31, declared he is gay in a television interview January 29, the day President Clinton said he intended to lift the ban on gays in the military.
Pridgen judge denies hate crime
Wilmington, N.C.-A judge on November 8 threw out language in a lawsuit that referred to an attack on a man at a gay bar as a hate crime, citing the lack of a state law on such action.
Superior Court Judge Ernest Fullwood said the case concerning the alleged attack by three Marines on Crae Pridgen at a Wilmington bar is about assault and battery, not hate crimes. The case will proceed to trial without that language.
The January 30 brawl received national attention because it came on the heels of President Clinton's announcement that he would lift the ban on gays in the military.
Pridgen's lawsuit asks for compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $10,000.
Condom PSAs no problem
Albany, N.Y.-Public service announcements bluntly advocating condom use to fight AIDS have been running with little fuss on several New York state television stations for months.
The three ads, which include one with a woman coaching her younger sister to tell her date "No glove, no love," were produced in Canada and distributed by the New York state health department starting last February.
One announcement features two gay men working out in a gym and discussing condom use. The third shows a worried man returning home to his wife and family after his male date refused to use a condom.
They all conclude: "Use a condom. Take charge. Take care."
Television stations in Rochester, Albany, Syracuse, Watertown, Kingston and Binghamton ran at least one of the New York state ads, according to the Health Department. Albany ran all three. None of the four broadcast stations in Buffalo said they would air the ads, according to the Health Department.
Neither state health officials nor several television executives interviewed said they had received any complaints about the public service announcements.
